The aim is for the first testing of the line to begin late next year. It will be one of eight new rail transit lines designed to help ease traffic gridlock in Beijing and will run from western Mentougou district to Pingguoyuan subway station.
Construction is expected to cost about 6bn yuan (£570m). Work had been due to start last year but was postponed several times because residents living near the proposed route raised concerns about exposure to radiation. There have also been concerns about the high power consumption required for the maglev system.
