The move was agreed at a board meeting yesterday.
Last week the government announced that £15.7m from its regional growth fund would go towards the £32m cost of diverting the A45 trunk road away from the airport perimeter. This will make space for the 400m runway extension.
Extending the runway will allow bigger planes to use the airport and so link Birmingham to farther destinations.
