Brookfield Multiplex to build Sydney research centre

6 Mar 12 The University of Sydney has appointed Brookfield Multiplex as the construction contractor for the AU$220m (£149m) Charles Perkins Centre at the Camperdown Campus in New South Wales.

The research and education centre will boost the university's capabilities in providing research and study in the diagnosis and treatment of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which are Australia's leading causes of illness and mortality.

The centre is named in honour of the late Charles Perkins, a University of Sydney graduate who was the first indigenous Australian to graduate from the university in 1965 and the recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University in 2000.

"Brookfield Multiplex is delighted to be working with the University of Sydney to deliver its vision of a world-class institute offering the very best in amenities and facilities for the university’s academics, students and researchers," said Brookfield Multiplex regional managing director NSW David Ghannoum. “During the tender process, Brookfield Multiplex offered the University of Sydney an alternate design which still met the university’s core needs. It was this design that led to our successful appointment."

The 46,700m2 centre will accommodate 950 researchers and 1,455 undergraduates and will provide laboratories, new imaging and flow cytometry facilities, including live cell imaging, clinical research facilities and a biobank.

It is set to revive the western end of the campus and create a new social and educational precinct for academics and researchers across a variety of disciplines. The site is close to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the faculties of medicine, science and veterinary science and the centre will cater for multidisciplinary research.

Brookfield Multiplex is scheduled to complete the work by late 2013.
