Burnside Technology in Lifts and Elevators Reduces Communication Costs by 25%

31 May 11 An essential task in managing buildings is the maintenance of lifts and lift communications.

Specifically, if passengers are trapped in stopped lifts, or a lift goes out of service, it is important that appropriate alarms are raised, and that anyone inside a lift can remain in communication. This is vital in case of a fire or other emergency, when landlines and power may be disabled.

A recent deployment of the Burnside T355 by lift specialist company Total Lifts, found that following the initial installation costs, over a 10 year period the GSM module will work out 25% cheaper than using a BT line. With no need for expensive wiring, installation is quick and requires very little maintenance. The GSM unit can be fitted in the lift machine room or the lift shaft, and will connect directly to the auto dialler in order to make an outgoing emergency call.

Jon Spear, Co-Director of Total Lifts said ‘The Burnside T355 offers security for both passenger and service personnel via a simple, highly reliable, cost effective system. The GSM capability means it can be installed almost anywhere and be up and running the same day, and at a fraction of the price of using a BT line. For companies with multiple sites, the cost savings will be huge’.

Although lifts tend to be in areas that receive poor GSM network signals, an antenna positioned outside a lift (on its roof, for example) and attached to a Burnside T355 can obtain a strong signal and in the event of a power failure, Burnside terminals can operate for up to a week from an internal battery supply.

‘The Burnside T355 is reliable, easy to use, easy to install and incredibly user friendly, I am already planning to promote the technology to a customer with 14 lifts on site’ added Jon Spear.

Customers currently using the Burnside phone in lifts and elevators are; Marks & Spencer’s, Otis, ThyssenKrup, Kone, Ace Elevators and Schindler Lifts.

The Burnside terminal not only offers the combined capabilities of a landline and a mobile, it also  provides the following applications;
