Cat excavators now fitted with anti-theft system

23 Mar 11 Caterpillar dealer Finning is fitting anti-theft devices to all new Cat 319D and 345D excavators as standard.

Caterpillar’s Machine Security System (MSS) immobilises the machine and disbales multiple operating systems of the machine until a specific Cat MSS key embossed with the owner’s unique code is inserted.

Finning product manager Mike Sproston explained: “The Cat MSS represents an initiative Finning wholeheartedly supports; to protect your investment in your machine, as well as giving you control over who can start and operate your equipment. Each Cat MSS key contains a unique security code that is checked by the electronic control module when it is inserted into the ignition against a list of pre-programmed keys. If the MSS does not recognise the key being used, the equipment cannot be operated.

“The security system also offers a whole range of programmable features that can be customised to your preference, empowering you with flexible control over access to your machinery. For example, unlicensed operators can be prevented from using machines on which they are not trained; MSS is even programmable to the extent that if you wish for a security key to expire at a certain time and date it will. You can even program a key so it can be used across a whole fleet, so almost any arrangement can be configured to your needs.”

The system has been endorsed by the police. DC Ian Elliott of the Police Plant and Agricultural National Intelligence Unit said: 'Plant theft has been very lucrative for criminal gangs for too long. By Finning installing the Cat-designed MSS system, their machines will meet Thatcham accredited security standards and will help protect them against being stolen."

MSS has been thoroughly tested by insurance consultants Thatcham and has achieved the P2 rating. In conjunction with the CESAR/Datatag scheme implemented last year by Finning the 319-345D excavators are now 3* accredited.
