Clugston makes office block from containers

6 Mar 12 An office block made from 37 standard shipping containers has been built in Sunderland by Clugston Construction as a demonstration of sustainable construction.

The £1.2m project has created 10,000 sq ft of office space over three storeys for Sustainable Enterprise Strategies (SES). SES will also offer office space in it to new start-up bu8sinesses in the area.

The containers were supplied by local company Waste Saving Expert, which was itself helped by SES in starting up.

SES director Mark Heskett Saddington said: “We chose his unusual method of construction because it’s sustainable and appropriate. SES is committed to the principle of reduce, re-use and recycle and of course Sunderland has a long association with shipping. It’s also a relatively quick and low cost construction method.”

The 37 containers have typically been in use for 20 years, travelling a million miles or more, transporting goods around the world - before being refurbished and given a new lease of life as corporate offices for SES in Sunderland.

Despite the innovative nature of the project and difficulties encountered in manoeuvring the containers onto and around the site, Clugston completed the project on time and on budget in 24 weeks.
