Reading Borough Council is moving out of its offices at the end of the year to the refurbished Plaza West building on Bridge Street.
The old civic centre in Hosier Street is deemed to have reached the end of its design life and also has problems with asbestos, making refurbishment prohibitive. It is therefore being pulled down and the area redeveloped.
Earlier this year the council selected Kier Property to fund and deliver a £60m mixed use regeneration scheme, with shops and housing.
The council has now published a contract notice for the demolition of the civic centre, with an estimated contract value of £5.5m. Work is expected to start in early 2015.
