The LanWin1 and LanWin3 platforms, for German client Amprion, will have a total capacity of 4GW and will collect the alternating current (AC) generated by several wind farms and convert it into high voltage direct current (DC).
Power from the platforms will then be converted back into AC at onshore stations about 400km away. The contract also includes construction of these onshore stations.
The two platforms will be built at Dragados Offshore’s yard in Cádiz, Spain. The work is expected to create over 2,000 jobs between now and 2029.
Amprion says that, with transmission and transport capacity of 2GW each, the two platforms will be able to power a major city of four million people – the size of Berlin. They are scheduled to be commissioned in 2029 and 2030.
Dragados Offshore is already working on four similar offshore converter projects for German operators under contracts that involve design, procurement, construction, transport, installation and commissioning in the North Sea.
