The project, which will be developed by Meeras, is intended to be an attractive destination for owners of the world’s largest ‘superyachts’, a third of which are owned by people in the Gulf area. Yachts up to 85m in length will be able to dock at the 1,400-berth marina.
Dubai Harbour will also have a cruise ship port and terminal, a shopping centre covering 3.5 million square feet, an events arena, residential buildings, hotels, offices, restaurants and cafes and ‘Dubai Lighthouse’. The project is scheduled to be completed in four years once the groundbreaking has taken place.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said: “Dubai Harbour creates a venue for new investments that support our vision for this important sector and promises to further accelerate the expansion of the tourism industry in the UAE, which is already growing rapidly.”
Meraas will work closely with various Dubai government entities, in particular with Road & Transport Authority, to deliver infrastructure that connects Dubai Harbour to the surrounding areas and provides multi-mode transport systems within the development. Visitors will be able to access Dubai Harbour either from King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street, a bridge that connects them directly from Sheikh Zayed Road or the monorail system that will link to the metro from both Palm Jumeirah and Bluewaters Island. A pedestrian bridge with a jogging and cycling track will also connect ‘Dubai Harbour’ to Palm Jumeirah.
In addition, ‘Dubai Harbour’ will offer an internal transport network and a connected road grid and monorail system that can transport passengers between different areas. The project’s roads will be designed to enable the destination to host races. A pedestrian bridge will also be constructed linking the yacht club area to the shopping mall and Skydive.
