The historic building dates back to 1582, when King James VI gifted the site to the Burgh for the creation of a new university. The University of Edinburgh was founded the following year and the Old College was built in 1789. William Playfair, Robert Adam and Rowand Anderson have all contributed to its design.
The university has published a contract notice calling for a main contractor to take on a four-phase internal refurbishment, expected to cost £20m. The aim is to refurbish all of the north side and several areas on the south side of the building over the next two-to-five years, including the Law Library and the octagonal lecture theatre. Enabling works have already begun and refurbishment work is planned to start in the summer.
The University of Edinburgh has appointed a design team led by LDN Architects. CDM-C responsibilities for the project are provided by Adams Consulting Group; Harley Haddow is mechanical and electrical consultant; structural engineer is Elliot & Company: and Sweett is the cost consultant.
