Construction union Ucatt called for the decision to be reversed. Acting regional secretary Rob Morris said: “This decision has been like a body blow to our members. In September 2011 workers at the factory took a pay cut of up to 25% to help keep the factory open.

Mr Morris added: “Ucatt and our members are committed to keeping this factory open. We want to sit down with the company and have a frank discussion to see if there is way to avoid closure.”
