The ambitious plans include a new 16,000m² seven storey Arts Building, which will be a highly sustainable and visually striking structure located at the gateway to Broadway, a new main pedestrian route through the university. Broadway will link the university and a new student village with the nearby and improved Salford Crescent railway station and the local communities around the campus.
The long term project will provide state-of-the-art teaching facilities for several faculties within the university, the refurbishment of existing buildings, new student accommodation and a complete realignment of spaces to transform the environment in and around the university.
Gifford is providing civil and structural engineering services and geotechnical services for the new Arts Building, designed by architects Stride Treglown, and a special engineering analysis team is undertaking wind modelling to make sure the new route through the cantilevered structure is comfortable for pedestrians.
Specialist advice from Gifford for the broader masterplan includes conceptual designs for the new student residences, a review of transport strategies, ecological studies and land drainage measures.
The new Arts Building is expected to be completed in 2013 and other projects in the larger masterplan will run through to 2015.
