Green Ipswich housing development is multiple award winner

10 May 11 A new £3.6 million affordable housing development in Ipswich has scooped yet another accolade, after taking silver at the recent Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) Awards.

The highly sustainable 36-unit Clump Field housing scheme is also shortlisted for the forthcoming Suffolk Association Design and Craftsmanship Awards and adds this latest honour to the Commendation it received in the Ipswich Society Awards and recognition as a scheme of ‘Regional Significance’ by the Civic Trust Awards.

The striking development for Orwell Housing Association is a true Ipswich success story with both the main contractor, ISG Jackson, and the project architect, Barefoot & Gilles, based in the town. Clump Field represents an important regional regeneration project and was carried out in partnership with Ipswich Borough Council to rejuvenate the former site of a derelict sheltered housing scheme.

The CCS Awards recognise excellence in considerate building practices and award winners represent the highest scoring 7½ per cent of all assessed UK sites. Individual projects are measured on the effectiveness of engagement with the local community, consideration towards the workforce and the environment and how successfully the project team deals with any complaints.

In addition to boasting excellent sustainable credentials through the use of modern methods of construction and high performance building materials, Suffolk Wildlife Trust also brought its expertise to the development to encourage greater biodiversity across the site, installing a number of bird and bat boxes and creating suitable habitats for local wildlife.

The Clump Field development comprises a mix of house types with a range of two, three and four bedroom town houses, one five bedroom house and a number of apartments across four separate blocks on site.

Roger Gilles, director at Barefoot & Gilles, commented: “The development was a real team effort with client, contractor and architect working together to achieve an outstanding result. We believe that the innovative design of the scheme together with the high quality build will create a sense of community and pride of place”

Michael Manning, director of ISG Jackson's Living division, added: "It is no great surprise to the project team that the Clump Field development continues to attract industry plaudits. The great success of the scheme was the collaborative nature of the relationship between all the project stakeholders, resulting in the delivery of an exceptional community development that enhances the local built environment and is a source of great pride for residents.”
