The original four-year deal started in April 2009 and was due to expire at the end of March 2013. Balvac has worked with the council since 1998.

Balvac has completed more than £20m of major maintenance, repair and strengthening work to highway structures around Runcorn and Widnes since 2009, including on the Silver Jubilee Bridge.

Future works are expected to be worth a further £3m to £5m and will include concrete repairs, cathodic protection, steelwork repainting and bridge deck refurbishment.

Balvac director Richard Bailey said: “This latest contract extension is the result of the long and successful collaborative working relationship between Balvac and Halton Borough Council”.

Mike Bennett, the council’s bridge maintenance partnership manager, added:: “The Silver Jubilee Bridge complex is an important link in the region’s strategic highway network and the scale and complexity of the bridge infrastructure aligned to the sensitivity of traffic to any disruption places demands on Halton Borough Council as a maintaining authority which are possibly unique. Balvac’s open and collaborative approach to developing and delivering works activities in a safe, effective and value for money manner has been instrumental to Halton Borough Council being able to address these demands.”
