The project is designed to relieve congestion and provide better access to the Port of Hull by improving the A63 between the St James Street/ Porter Street junctions and the Market Place/Queen Street junctions. It is categorised as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) under the Planning Act 2008.
The first task for the chosen contractor is to exhume 15,000 bodies from the Holy Trinity Burial Ground, which needs to be cleared to make way for the 1.5km-long scheme.
Core of the project is the improvement of the Mytongate junction by lowering the A63 by seven metres and raising Ferensway/Commercial Road by a metre to cross the A63 on a new bridge.
Construction is expected to take 48 months to complete from award of contact.
