Kier to build hotel in Haiti reconstruction

15 Feb 13 Kier has been awarded the design and build contract for a hotel project in Haiti.

The hotel is seen as a pivotal scheme in the island’s reconstruction following the devastating earthquake that struck in January 2010.

The 175-bedroom hotel in Port-au-Prince is being financed by mobile phone provider Digicel Group and will be operated by Marriott Hotels & Resorts.

The development will include five suites, a casual restaurant with private dining area, fitness centre, swimming pool and a lobby area with a bar, shops and lounge. The property will also have a ballroom, which will accommodate 380 people for dining and around 500 theatre style.

Design work is under way and Kier already has a core team on site.

The start of the project was recently announced in Haiti with a groundbreaking ceremony, during which Kier Construction managing director Tim Corrigan and regional director Steve Milner were joined by Digicel chairman & founder Denis O’Brien, Marriott International’s president & chief executive, Arne Sorenson; and Minister of Tourism Stéphanie Balmir Villedrouin, to put the first shovel into the ground.

Full construction operations will begin in March with completion due in December 2014.
