The Belfast-based contractor will deliver £8.7 million (U$13.9 USD) in runway and safety improvements at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport after beating off international competition. Lagan Virginia, a subsidiary of Lagan Construction, will undertake the work on behalf of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA).
Lagan Construction will carry out complete resurfacing of the main runway, taxiways and intersections including the replacement of the centre line and touch-down zone lighting. The works will also involve significant earthworks, soil erosion control measures and the relocation of communication cables and access roads at the north end runway safety area. Some 55,000t of Marshall Asphalt will be milled out and replaced.
The repairs will be carried out during limited night-time possessions to enable the runway to be reopened each morning. The project starts in May and is due for completion in Autumn 2011.
“This scheme is the result of three years of planning and development, following our success in the US affiliated island of Puerto Rico where we carried out extensive rehabilitation work at Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in 2008,” said Lagan Construction managing director Colin Loughran.
