Lakeside shopping centre submits plans for £180m expansion

8 Dec 11 Lakeside shopping centre is seeking approval for a £180m extension that would increases its size by nearly a third and make it Britain’s third biggest shopping centre.

Capital Shopping Centres (CSC) yesterday submitted a planning application to add 325,000 sq ft (30,000 sqm) of additional net retail sales space at the northern end of the centre – enough for 40 more stores.

The works will also include an improved transport infrastructure comprising a new bus station linked to Chafford Hundred rail station and provision for a link road to the north of the centre. There will also be a new landscaped external street and public square.

The extension will see the creation of around 1,000 construction jobs and 2,600 permanent jobs on completion.

The plans have been submitted in an outline application to Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Council. If they get planning consent, construction could begin onsite in 2013 with the full scheme fully open in 2016.

This would make Lakeside bigger than Bluewater, The Trafford Centre and Westfield London. Only Westfield Stratford City and the Gateshead Metrocentre would be bigger.
