Laser control turns dozers into graders

11 Mar 14 A new system for controlling the work of bulldozers has been developed by Leica Geosystems.

The Leica iCON grade iGD4SP solution uses laser technology to calculate the lift, angle, and tilt of a dozer’s six-way blade while working at full speed.

It allows operators to angle the blade while the system’s hydraulic control system automatically controls the blade’s lift and tilt. In this way, the required grade is constantly maintained – automatically – with no requirement to reduce speed.

Claimed benefits include elimination of the need to rework areas, thus saving time, fuel and machinery wear and tear.

By using the new dual mast GNSS configuration, operators know the machine’s exact heading and direction and can achieve the desired grade at all times while controlling material with fewer passes.

Leica says that the system can even allow dozers to be used for fine grading applications that would normally require motor graders.

The masts have been made thinner and cables more tightly coiled to improve visibility on previous machine guidance systems, Leica says.
