Los Angeles gets extra funding for two new rail lines

19 Feb 16 The US Department of Transportation has agreed US$300m (£209m) in additional funding for two major rail projects under construction in Los Angeles County.

The Regional Connector project will get US$100m of federal funding while the Westside Purple Line extension (Sections 1 and 2) will receive US$200m.

“The announcement today that $300 million in federal transportation dollars will be headed to Los Angeles will ensure that Metro can bring more mobility to serve commuters in LA County,” said Metro CEO Phillip Washington. “I am pleased that these federal dollars will support good paying construction jobs in Los Angeles.”

In February 2014, the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) provided a federal full funding grant agreement (FFGA) in the amount of US$670 million for the Regional Connector.  This FFGA for the Regional Connector was accompanied by a US$160 million low-interest federal loan.

The 3km Regional Connector, which is currently under construction, extends from the Metro Gold Line to downtown Los Angeles, allowing passengers to transfer to Blue, Expo, Red and Purple Lines, bypassing Union Station.

In May of 2014, the USDOT provided an FFGA of US$1.2bn for the Westside Purple Line Extension (Section 1) transit project. This FFGA was accompanied by a US$856 million low interest federal loan. The Westside Purple Line Extension transit project, which is also under construction, will provide a high-capacity, high-speed, alternative for commuters to travel between downtown Los Angeles and Westwood in just 25 minutes.
