Middle East’s heaviest-ever load moved

12 Jan 12 Project logistics company Al Majdouie has carried out the on-shore transportation of what is claimed to be the heaviest load ever moved in the Middle East.

The move involved an evaporator, weighing 4,891t and destined for a desalination plant being built by Doosan in Saudi Arabia. Doosan won the order for the plant project for US$1.76bn (£1.14bn) from Saline Water Conversion Corporation. Al Majdouie was awarded the overall on-shore activities for the evaporator.

The evaporator measures almost 124m long, 34m wide and 12m in height. In 2010, Al Majodouie had transported six slightly smaller evaporators weighing 4,600t for a project in Abu Dhabi.

Al Majdouie used self-propelled modular trailers with 172 axle lines, 688 double-width tyres and a capacity of 6,680t. Months of preparation took place, including planning route simulations to move the huge unit from Ras al Khair Jetty to the site. Al Majdouie will be moving a total eight evaporator, with the next expected in February 2012.
