Work has begun on site at a £5.7m new-build development at The Shade Primary School in Soham. The project comprises the construction of a single-storey building that will house 10 classrooms, an assembly hall and new catering facilities.
The building will be constructed using a cross laminate timber (CLT) frame and is set to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’, aided by storm water attenuation tanks, solar panels and air-source heating technology.
The development will be Soham’s third primary school and will create an additional 420 primary and pre-school places once completed in December 2013.
Morgan Sindall has also been awarded a £3.1m refurbishment project at Shirley Lower School in Chesterton, Cambridge. Work has also already started here, remodelling corridors and classrooms, levelling floors and repairing windows and door frames.
External renovations will include soft and hard landscaping improvements across the school’s grounds and surrounding areas. Work is expected to complete in September 2013.

Morgan Sindall was awarded the two contracts under the Cambridgeshire County Council framework agreement.
