The harbour, north of Thurso, is home to fishing fleets and to ferry services to the Orkey Islands, Faroes, Iceland and Norway. It also serves the offshore oil and gas industry.
Scrabster Harbour Trust is planning to redevelop and upgrade its Old Fish Market Pier within the harbour to provide additional and improved deepwater berthing facilities not only to improve services to the fishing industry but also to enable it to take the next generation of inshore tankers. Extending the port facilities will allow it to service oil and gas exploration and development to the west of the Shetlands.
Gardiner & Theobald has been appointed project manager under a £252,000 contract – half the £500,000 that the trust had budgeted.
