Robinson Steel Structures secures £3.6m Derby schools steelwork contracts

7 Jun 11 Structural steelwork specialist Robinson Steel Structures has landed contracts totalling £3.6 million to work on two major secondary school building projects in Derby.

The projects have been awarded to Robinson Steel Structures by Balfour Beatty Construction which is delivering the schemes as part of Derby City Council’s schools building programme.

Robinson has been appointed by Balfour Beatty Construction to deliver the structural steel framework for the rebuilding of Noel-Baker Community School, Alvaston, Derby. The school is undergoing a complete rebuild, designed by Nicholas Hare Architects, with the new site also set to house St Martin’s Special School.

Through a £2.3 million contract, Robinson will design, fabricate and build the steelwork structure and metal decking – a total of 1,200 tonnes of structural steel – as well as supplying precast flooring and stairways. The three-storey high main building will have separate entrances for the two schools it will house. A separate building will accommodate vocational courses and a new sports centre.

The company will build the structural steelwork, and decking and supply precast flooring and stairways. The rebuild has been designed by architectural practice Hawkins\Brown.

Robinson managing director Mike Newton says: “We have an impressive track record in the delivery of high-performance learning facilities and are delighted to be working with Balfour Beatty on these major school building projects which will create state-of-the-art new learning facilities.”

The Robinson team has just started work on the Noel-Baker Community School site. Work on the steelwork for Derby Moor Community Sports College is set to start this month (June). Both new schools are due to open in September 2012.
