Shard’s final section in place

4 Apr 12 The final section of steel has been lifted into place on the Shard, the tallest building in the EU.

The building is now at its full height of 310m and set for external completion in June.

It has taken around 100 crane lifts to construct the third and final section's steelwork which comprises a total of 800 separate pieces of steel. In addition to the steel the final stage is being clad in 516 panes of glass, forming a relatively small part of nearly 11,000 panes that have been used to clad the Shard overall.

As principal contractor Mace provided the logistics for the exercise, in conjunction with engineers from WSP and steelwork contractor Severfield Reeve Structures.

Mace chief operating officer Gareth Lewis said: "We have now reached the summit of the Shard safely and on time. Lifting the final seven tonne section into place to bring the structure to its full 310 metre height is a great achievement by the whole team."
