The £33m contract sees Shepherd renovate the grade ll listed former Berners Hotel in Fitzrovia. The building will become a luxury hotel under the Edition brand, created by Marriott International in partnership with American hotelier Ian Schrager.
Shepherd Construction left the site nearly two years when the previous owner JJW Hotels & Resorts fell into administration in August 2010.
The hotel, which has been closed since 2006, was bought by Marriott in November 2010 and will become The London Edition when it opens in 2013. The hotel will be one of six Edition hotels that are scheduled to be operating across three continents by 2015.
The building was originally built in 1835 as five separate houses. The façade will be restored to its former glory and the interior will be extensively refurbished to create a 175-bedroom hotel. Shepherd is scheduled to complete work on the project by December 2012.
Shepherd is using a turnkey approach as it is also the architect on the project and M&E services are being provided by sister company SES. Quantity surveyor is Gleeds Cost Management.
Resumption of work on this building comes soon after completion of the £45m refurbishmentand restoration of Rockliffe Hall at Hurworth, near Darlington, which is now a luxury five-star hotel resort recently ranked in the world top 10 Travellers’ Choice Hotel Awards.
Shepherd is also working in London on a £58m school building project in Holland Park, a £27m luxury apartment scheme near Regent’s Park, and a £4.5m project to convert a warehouse into apartments at Pimlico.
