The individually tendered projects are for the refurbishment of Western Power Distribution’s depots in Birmingham, Bristol and Llanfihangel. It brings to 14 the number of jobs Speller Metcalfe has done for WPD’s facilities upgrade programme, with a total value of £22.2m. Work includes remodelling and extending workshops and offices and extensive external works.
By far the largest of the newly awarded projects is the £8.5m redevelopment of the WPD site in Aston, Birmingham. The project has involved working closely with Network Rail as the site sits just four metres from the main railway line in to the city. Significant investigation has also been undertaken by Speller Metcalfe into the risk of contaminated land.
Speller Metcalfe has been highly involved in various design elements including cladding, steel connection, concrete repair, insulation and taken full responsibility for M&E. The project is targeted to achieve BREEAM Very Good.
The refurbishment of WPD’s Birmingham depot (below) is due for completion in August 2017.
