Teenagers to begin apprenticeships with Higgins Construction PLC

31 Jan 11 Alex Williams and Ibrahim Miah are the first teenagers to begin apprenticeships with Higgins Construction plc from a new vocational training partnership with contractor Haydon Mechanical & Electrical and the charity Barnardo's, which will involve a day-release course at Barking College.

They are seen before starting work on the 24-storey apartment block of a Swan Housing Group development under construction by Higgins in the Poplar area of east London.

Alex (plumber) and Ibrahim (electrician) were recruited from The Hub construction skills centre run by Barnardo's, where plumbing, decorating and carpentry are taught to the 'lost generation' of young people not in education, employment or training.

Both trainees began work as the towerblock was being fitted out with plant and cladding to achieve the Eco Homes rating of 'excellent', working to a design by the architects BLDA.

A biomass boiler serves the development's three blocks that taper in the heights of their green roofs to the tower block.
