Union sues over treatment of ex-Connaught workers

25 Jan 11 GMB says that it has launched legal proceedings against Kier, Lovell, KPMG and Hull City Council’s in-house contractor KWL for their treatment of former employees of Connaught.

GMB has submitted cases to the Employment Tribunal against the four organisations for what it claims to be the unlawful deduction of wages, unfair dismissal and failure to consult 129 ex-Connaught workers.

Following the collapse of social housing maintenance firm Connaught in October last year, Hull City Council transferred an £8m maintenance contract and 129 workers to Morgan Sindall subsidiary Lovell Partnerships. Workers were being paid by Lovell until 12 January when payments were stopped. GMB complained that staff had been abandoned while the contract transfer was completed.

GMB organiser Les Dobbs said: "GMB members have been treated badly and are out of pocket. GMB expect employers to obey the law and accept their social responsibility with regard to their employees. When they disregard the welfare of their workers and attempt to shun their responsibility then GMB will act, with the law if necessary, to safeguard GMB members rights."
