Work starts on giant Las Vegas wheel

26 May 11 Site clearance has begun this week for the Skyvue Las Vegas Super Wheel, which will be bigger than the 135m-high London Eye.

The 152m observation wheel will stand on the site of a 1950s-era motel and will be part of a complex that will also include a roller coaster and 200,000 square feet of restaurant, retail and entertainment venues. Completion of the complex is projected for the first half of 2013.

Led by Las Vegas developer Howard Bulloch of Compass Investments, the project is estimated to cost more than $100m (£61.7m). The wheel will have 40 heated and air-conditioned passenger gondolas offering panoramic views. The gondolas will each hold 20-25 passengers and will available for private catered parties with food, entertainment and cocktail service.
