Construction at the ends of the earth
This video shows the construction and engineering challenges of building the new £40m wharf at Rothera Research Station – the largest Antarctic facility for British Antarctic Survey.
The new wharf was built to moor the new polar ship for Great Britain, the RRS Sir David Attenborough (the vessel that famously nearly became Boaty McBoatface).
A specialist team of engineers, divers, builders and project managers built the 74-metre wharf over 18 months during the Antarctic summer seasons (November to May).
The 50-strong team from construction partners and designers of the wharf, BAM, with the support of Sweco and technical advisors, Ramboll, completed a second, six-month construction season in 2020. Turner & Townsend also provided cost management for the project.
