Taking an 800-tonne bridge for a drive down the road
Dutch heavy-lift specialist Mammoet used self propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) to move an 800-tonne concrete bridge from over the M53 during a motorway closure in Birkenhead during the first weekend of August 2020.
The 50-year-old bridge, which carried the southbound entry slip road over the motorway at junction 2 near Moreton, was lifted out and then rotated by 90 degrees before being transported down the road to an earmarked demolition zone.
A replacement bridge is is due to open in summer 2021.
